What is Fairy Kei? (22 Examples)

 , updated on
Fairy kei is a Japanese style associated with street fashions, anime, manga and cosplay that is characterized by neon pastel colors and a hyper-feminine look that invokes images of fairies. Lightweight voluminous fabrics and accessories that are literally light such as flowers and balloons are used to create an airy look. This generates the illusion that you might be able to float or fly like a fairy. The faint glow of neon pastel colors contributes to this delicate, ethereal and weightless quality. Fairy kei first emerged in the early 2000s as a street fashion in Tokyo and has gone through many iterations with early prototypes having more of a candy, youthful and 1980s retro feel. The modern incarnation is more of a mature, futuristic and mystical look that has gravitated towards ornate dresses, neon pastel hair and lush flowers.
